DESIGN A PASTRY FOR AN AFTERNOON TEA EXPERIENCE AT THE SHELBOURNE

Currently being affectionately restored, the Lord Mayor’s Lounge at The Shelbourne, Dublin’s most historic Drawing Room is home to one of the most pleasurable of rituals at Dublin’s favourite five-star hotel – afternoon tea.

Alongside the essential elements of a traditional afternoon tea – the selection of sublime sandwiches, lovingly homemade scones with traditional accompaniments of clotted cream and jams – the afternoon tea menu at The Shelbourne showcases the art of the pâtissier, as it always includes some exceptional and exquisite pastries created by the talented team of pastry chefs at the hotel.

To celebrate the unveiling of the elegant new look at the Lord Mayor’s Lounge, The Shelbourne is inviting keen amateur bakers to create a new pastry that would fit right in to a special afternoon tea experience at the hotel for the winner.

Create a Shelbourne-inspired pastry, take a picture and submit with the recipe, and the winner chosen by The Shelbourne will visit the hotel kitchen for a day to meet and work with Executive Chef Garry Hughes and his team to finesse the winning pâtisserie design.

Then, on a chosen date, the winner will return to The Shelbourne with five friends to enjoy afternoon tea in the Lord Mayor’s Lounge that will feature their very own pastry masterpiece.

Inspiration for this pâtisserie can come from any aspect of The Shelbourne’s history or décor. Perhaps it can take its theme from the classic Irish country house colour scheme of golden yellow and ivory in the newly renovated Lord Mayor’s Lounge, or maybe a design might be suggested by the very special 19th century Waterford Crystal chandelier, an original of the hotel townhouse which being reinstated, perhaps the beautiful floral arrangements or indeed the pretty Chinoiserie cabinets

The pastry chef is a key member of any kitchen team, and these desserts take imagination, dexterity, confidence and élan to produce. Test your pastry skills and celebrate The Shelbourne’s central role in the social life of Dublin with a pastry perfect for a special afternoon in Ireland’s drawing room, the Lord Mayor’s Lounge.

Entrants must submit their entry including Full Name and contact details, picture of their afternoon tea pastry entry that they have baked themselves including original recipe. Photo entries must be verified as being original. Competition entries along with photo must be submitted via entry to shelbournecompetitions@marriott.com no later than 5pm on March 19th 2018. Submissions received after this time will not be considered. There will be one winner. Winner will be chosen from the complete pool of fully eligible photo entries submitted, by The Judge – The Shelbourne Hotel’s Executive Head Chef Garry Hughes. Winner will be contacted by March 23rd 2018 and have until the 14:00 on 26th March to respond, otherwise a new winner will be selected. The judges’ decision is final.

Prize is: A one day Chef experience at The Shelbourne Hotel on April 3rd 2018, to include tour of The Shelbourne Hotel, meet and greet with Executive Head Chef Garry Hughes and The Shelbourne Pastry Team. Recipe masterclass with The Shelbourne Pastry Team and work step by step to finesse their winning afternoon tea pastry. Lunch x 1 in The Saddle Room Restaurant. Tasting and feedback session with Head Chef Garry Hughes on the completed winning afternoon tea pastry, followed by presentation and picture. Pastry Chef Uniform for the day’s experience. Invitation to return to The Shelbourne with five friends to enjoy a special afternoon tea in The Lord Mayor’s Lounge including their finessed winning pastry on their menu. Booking is subject to availability. Prize is as stated, non-transferable with no cash alternative. Competition entry must be amateur bakers own original recipe and created pastry. Competition is not open to staff, associates of The Irish Times, Shelbourne Hotel or affiliates. Winner must be available to attend their full day experience on April 3rd 2018. Shelbourne Chef reserves the right to final approval and presentation of the winning dessert on date of winners afternoon tea experience.
